Carol Fitzgerald Memorial Fund Weekend

Thank you to everyone who showed up to support the Carol Fitzgerald Memorial Fund over the weekend of April 9th and 10th to celebrate the accomplishments and joy my Mom, Carol, brought to people’s lives.  She was a giving and caring woman and mother, and her spirit was touchingly alive during the events over the weekend.

Every year the Carol Fitzgerald Memorial Fund raises money and then gives it out to great organizations working on the issues that were especially important to my mom: HIV/AIDS prevention and support, breast cancer prevention and support, and education.

Family members arrived from all over the country – Phoenix, Chicago, Cincinnati, Atlanta, and even North Dakota.   Friday night there was a reception at the Metropolitan in Golden Valley, Minnesota.   Special thanks to family friend, American Idol recording star and Grammy nominee Jordin Sparks for coming in to town to support the events and perform at the Friday night event. Thanks also to NFL stars Tommie Harris, Terrell Johnson, Ray Edwards, Pat Williams and hall of famer Jim Marshall, who graciously talked football and took pictures with the crowd for hours.

On Saturday afternoon, we had a Community Celebration at the MLK Center in Minneapolis. Marcus and I spent many afternoons and evenings playing basketball, ping pong, and swimming at the Center as kids, so it’s always a special treat to come back home and see familiar faces at the King Park. We raised additional funds, and checks were given out to several organizations doing great work. It was especially great to see so many of my mom’s friends and co-workers.

Sunday was family day, and a chance to have a good old fashioned Sunday brunch.

To end a great weekend back in Minnesota, I was able to go to the first game ever for the hometown Twins at the new Target Field - baseball outdoors, on grass, wearing the throwback pinstripes.  Early in the game, Orlando Hudson was slick as usual, Carl Pavano kept the Sox hitters off balance, and hometown superstar Joe Mauer ripped a double to right. A new era in Minnesota baseball got off to a great start.  It was a relaxing and historic afternoon.

My boys and I thought about your event the evening of the 9th and talked about what great things you are doing. I use what you are doing as an example to them so they can learn they can do great things too! Plus, my son Chris had his birthday that day (9th) and just turned 11. He is a huge, I mean huge fan of yours and he knows this is going to be the year..he just turned 11, you are #11, and its the 10 -11 year..This year is the year!!!

Larry,
I have followed you since you were at Pitt, as I am a loyal Pittsburgh fan. Your work ethic and life story is inspiring to us all. I too lost my mother several years back. She suffered a brain aneurysm and it was a very sudden occurrence. What you do off the field to keep you mother's spirit alive is admirable, I am sure she is very proud of you. Keep up the great work Larry!

Thank you, Larry

I just want to thank you, Tommie, and all the others who bring joy to other people's lives. I know your mother is looking down on you from heaven with a smile on her face.

Hi Larry,

Touching story and I think it's wonderful you are carrying on for you Mom. I wasn't aware that you blogged, I am so glad I caught that Tweet this morning.
We might be "who dey" fans here, but my son and I are definitely Larry Fitzgerald fans. He is quick to pause, rewind, and call me in the room whenever you are mentioned on ESPN!
Good luck to you next season!
