Volunteering in India

I am in India to volunteer my time to help my neighbor and friends Mr and Mrs Bill Austin and Heather Sauber who have a passion to give children the gift of sound. It is truly a honor to be around a group of people who want to give so unselfishly. They have allowed me to be hands on in the work fitting kids daily with hearing aids. It is pure joy to see the face of a child who is able to hear the sound of a voice for the first time.

Yesterday we had the chance to visit Agra.  It is home to the Taj Mahal. It has been a goal of mine to visit this wonder of the world for some time. It took 22 years to complete the structure and it is truly amazing.  The population of this country is over 1.2 billion people and it is the size of Texas and Oklahoma combined.

My visit was arranged by the Starkey Hearing Foundation which has as its mission to Identify and amplify children who are enrolled in school, or because of lack of hearing aid/amplification cannot be enrolled in school. All children should be fitted in both ears unless the hearing condition requires a single hearing aid.

My best, Fitz

What an amazing experience. Without hearing children cannot develop speech, go to school (in some countries), and lose peer and family interaction. Ear infections are the most common childhood illness throughout the world. In poorer countries, they go untreated or are treated with ototoxic drugs causing hearing loss. I am an ASU student who is looking into taking hearing aids to Malawi, Madagascar, and Rwanda this summer with a small group. I hope to have the same wonderful experience and satisfaction. Thank you for sharing your off season life.

This seems like an amazing trip and you are an amazing person. To help deaf children to be able to hear is an outstanding thing. I commend you on all of the things you are doing. God Bless!

Thanks

Fitz, great to see you helping out. I have spent the last 9 years helping out in Africa. The story in the Republic about your trip is so true: seeing real poverty makes you appreciate the US. Keep up the good work.

Thank You

Hey Fitz, thanks for reminding us all how good we have it here in the states. It's sad how little most of us give back. You're an inspiration, and my husband & I are soooo excited about the upcoming season!!
